CULTURAL INFORMATION Madeira has been subject to influences by the Portuguese and other cultures of Northern Europe, especially Flanders and Great Britain. There is a cultural heritage of 500 years, exemplified in many Churches and Chapels of architectural beauty, containing spectacular altars and other religious artefacts. There are many museums containing exhibits of etnographical interest in addition to museums dedicated to private collections. The first contains landscape paintings of Madeira during the 19th century. The second part consists of over 2,000 objects collected by Dr.Freitas from his travels around the world including oriental carpets, religious paintings and sculptures, tiles etc. Rare objects include statues originating from the Middle Ages and Renaissance Period. It contains numerous masterpieces by Flemish artists from the 15th and 16th centuries. Many of these were donated by Madeira's wealthy sugar merchants when trade on the island was at its height.
