NIGHTLIFE INFORMATION

Here are some of our impressions of what nocturnal Funchal has to offer. When you arrive in Madeira ask the tourism office (airport or Funchal) or hotel receptionist for a FREE copy of Maderia Life and you will find details from many advertisers.

CASINO DINNER SHOWS
Enjoy the glitzy nightlife at the CASINO. Choose from the following shows:- “Millennium” • “New York New York” • “Brasi Latino” • “Cabaret” Staring: Sian Lesley, Sérgio Borges and Dancers. After a nice dinner with live entertainment by the resident band, join us on different nights of the week to: 1950's nostalgia through to the present date, America with great dance routines and songs, Rio in Brazil and the French Cabaret!

If your idea of a good time is hanging out with a few friends and casually having a few beers, do yourself a favor and head to Amarras Café on Rua das Murças. You can either relax at one of the street-side tables (and never tire of people-watching), or head indoors and find your niche in this nautical-inspired, coffee-shop like space. Choose a spot among the clusters of cushy couches, or on one of the many interesting iron chairs. Whatever you do, don't forget to observe the chaotic, kitchshy collection of paraphernalia behind the bar. The local crowd here is never too obnoxious, and prices are very reasonable. Tell the owner Carlos that we sent you!

Supposing you fancy yourself to be more of a jet-setter type, you will feel perfectly acclimated at
Do Fa Sol. Opposite the marina and just below the Galerias de São Lourenço you will find an esplanade littered with aluminum tables and seats, where live music (usually jazz) can be enjoyed every night. Once inside the actual bar, you can perch yourself at one of the sleek, oak tables and exchange elite looks with all of the other snake-skin clad patrons. Strangely enough, our favorite part of this bar just might have to be the lavatory facilities upstairs - the pornographic tiles will either make you blush, or laugh...or...never mind.

Perhaps you are one of those who prefer to surround yourself with mostly English-speaking folk; if this is the case,
Pub Number Two on Rua da Favila is your destination. This bar truly lives up to its name - complete with beer logo mirrors, dark wood, and crowds of shameless revelers, a few hours here can make you feel that home really isn´t too far away. If you are a visitor and proud of it, join the ranks of inebriated tourists as they mingle with the amused natives who make this place their favorite haunt.

And if you equate weekends with club hopping, we have just the itinerary for you. Carved into a seaside cliff (directly across from the cargo depot in the Marina) are two of the best dance spots on the island. Kick off the evening around midnight at
O Marginal; as the name keeps changing, our advice is to look for an inconspicuous, rectangular white building with porthole-style windows. The space inside is rather small, but the vibe is very progressive and tastefully urban. There is an area for loungers, a dance area studded with table fixtures resembling punching bags, a bar counter flooded with holographic images, and bathroom ceilings lined with synthetic fur. Local djs spin trance, trip hop, (you name it!) from a tiny, elevated room in the back of the club. The place is always packed until 4 am...the real bonus is that drinks aren´t exorbitantly priced, nor is there a cover charge. If you are a true raver, you will then move next door to Vespas , where you will become legally deaf by the time some people climb out of bed. Be prepared to battle for breathing room in a vast warehouse teeming with writhing figures, each holding at least one cigarette. And forget getting a drink at one of the many bars...you might never get there. Don´t be afraid...if all this seems to frightening, explain to us why they never experience a shortage of bodies? yo
