SPORT INFORMATION

Many people think of Madeira as a place for folks in the later stages of their life. There is in fact an undercurrent of sporting activities for the more youthful especially those relating to more extreme and radical sports. We will continue to try and update this page with new sports and welcome any contributions.

CANYONING
Getting down the rivers of Madeira is a way to see undiscovered and untouched parts of the island, while revelling in the exciting journey through transparent waters. During summer the northern rivers are the most appropriate, as the flows are high and there is enough white water to create an exciting challenge. During winter, however, we recommend the streams to the south, with gentler, quieter flows.

CLIMBING
Madeira’s volcanic origins and its rugged mountainous relief are a guarantee of adventurous moments. To summit the impressive and magnificent mountains bursting directly from the sea is a memorable conquest for any climber worth his salt. The favoured areas for climbing are the central mountain range, the sea cliffs and some of the northern cliffs.

FISHING
There are many places along the south coast suitable for shore fishing (bream and rays) although care should be taken if fishing from rocks. Sportfishing for tuna, marlin, bonito, spearfish etc is available.

GOLF
Two courses, with 18 to 27 holes, have been laid out in exceptionally beautiful landscapes. Golf lovers will be delighted by the challenges accompanying of each hole as well as by the fabulous scenery. The Madeira Open is the most important event and forms part of the European PGA circuit.
